(Photo
from Svein Torske personnal flights :-)
Hi Franck,
I have now found the positions of all 3 photographs that you
have on your web-site. They are all taken within a short period
before the PRU-spit crash site is reached. ... Knoke may probably
have started from Lade and not Værnes. This is confirmed
in Nigel Smiths book : Tirpitz, The Halifax Raids, p.64 (Air
Research Publications 1994). [As Wennekers
wrote Trondheim in his flightbook you are probably right. NWM]
So on my map I have indicated a route from Lade in Trondheim
heading westwards towards the PRU-Spits crash site close to
Bøverdal.
The blue angles on the map are approx. fields of view corresponding
to a 50mm (standard) lens. Knocke may have used a wider angle,
making my positions slightly unaccurate.
The picture 2 is
taken right above a place called Fannrem in Orkdal. It shows
Gjølme to starboard which is close to Orkanger. The lake
in the centre is Fjellkjøsvatnet. They have climbed a
little higher at this point, so we can see the mountains of
Snillfjord over to the left.
I have "reconstructed" the flight in Microsoft flight
simulator and I am sending pictures for comparison. ...This
is not exact science, however as a rough indication it shows
a good resemblance between flightsim. and Knoke's pictures.
Flightsim do not provide sufficient snow and ice. The simulator
was set to march 6th. 1942 :-)
I would really like to refly this trip in a real plane.
So here we leave Knocke and his comerades unless there are other
pictures from his flight. It is quite strange compared to his
description in his book, it is from here and further to south
west you will find high spectacular mountains with peaks above
6000ft. Why did Knocke take his shots in the more "boring"
scenery of Trøndelag and not the wild mountains of Sunnmøre.
[Maybe because Knoke took pictures from
the places he was hoping to remember about the pursuit of the
Spitfire ? NWM] The route you have indicated on your
site, would certainly take him over this area where he really
would use his camera. Did he run out of film?? Or did he simply
turn eastwards after having passed the Spitfires last position??
[As I didn't know if there's other pictures
of this flight it's difficult to answer. Going back eastwards
seem very improbable, but points southwards and you will go
directly to Nesbyen and Sperillen
! NWM]
kind regards Svein
